Woodstock

Edwin Starr
War, What is it good for

In 1968 Motown bought Ric-Tic, which gave Edwin access to their writers and producers. This is a protest song about the Vietnam war even though it makes a broader statement of the need for harmony in our everyday lives. War was one of the first Motown songs to make a political statement.

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, why'all
War, huh, good god
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tears to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives
I said, war, huh good god, why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
War, whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Oh, war it's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die, ah, war-huh, good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) it's got one friend that's the undertaker
Oh, war, has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious
To spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life
It can only take it away
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing say it again
whoa, lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing listen to me
it ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But lord knows there's got to be a better way
Oh, war, huh good god why'all
What is it good for you tell me
Say it, say it, say it, say it
huh good god why'all
What is it good for
Stand up and shout it nothing

For and against beatlemania

 For the tour:

Teenage girls were for the Beatlemania tour because they related to their songs and it was on topic of the new generations things. It gave the girl some feel of independence and youth and that why they loved the Beatles so much.

Against the tour:

The older generation was against the tour because they didn't want there children to listen to their music. The older generation had a different perspective of the Beatlemania and they thought of it so differently then the teenagers and didn't like it because they thought it was inappropriate.

Beatlemania

I want to hold your hand

In this song they are talking about wanting to hold someone's hand and it sounds like it is some type of love song. The girls that listen to the Beatles will love this song because of what it is about and they went crazy for the Beatles.

Oh yeah, I'll tell you somethin'
I think you'll understand
When I say that somethin'
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
Oh please, say to me
You'll let me be your man
And please, say to me
You'll let me hold your hand
Now, let me hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
And when I touch you
I feel happy inside
It's such a feelin' that my love
I can't hide
I can't hide
I can't hide
Yeah, you got that somethin'
I think you'll understand
When I say that somethin'
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
And when I touch you
I feel happy inside
It's such a feelin' that my love
I can't hide
I can't hide
I can't hide
Yeah, you got that somethin'
I think you'll understand
When I feel that somethin'
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand

Anzac

When do you hear this song?

On Anzac day or in arm's memorials. In military tradition, the last post is the bugle call that signifies the end of the days activities. It is also sounded at the military funerals to indicate that the soldier has gone to his final rest and at commemorative services such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.

Why is this song significant/important to New Zealand?

The Las Post was played to signal the end of the soldiers activities for the day. It is still used today at military funerals and memorial services Its use in funeral indicates that the serviceman or woman's duty is complete ans they can rest in peace.

What is the History behind the Last post - Why was it played and when?

It originated with British troops stationed in the Netherlands, where it drew on an older Dutch custom and it was called tap toe, from which comes the term tattoo as in Military tattoo. The tap toe was also used to signal the end of the day, but originated from a signal that beer taps had to be shut, hence that the day had ended.

What does this song represent?

Music Through Time

Harriet Tubman is possibly the most well known of all the underground railroads conductors. During a ten year span she made about 19 trips into the south and she escorted over 300 slaves to freedom. As she once pointed out to Frederick Douglass, in all of her journeys she never lost a single passenger.
This is one of the songs they used to help out each other and songs are ways to communicate to each other. This song Steal Away was used to communicate that the person who is singing the song is planning to escape and that's how they communicate.

Steal Away

Chorus: steal away, steal away!

Steal away to Jesus?
Steal away, steal away home!
I ain’t got long to stay here!

My Lord calls me!
He calls me by the thunder!
The trumpet sound it in my soul!
I ain’t got long to stay here!

Chorus

My Lord calls me!
He calls me by the lighting!
The trumpet sound it in my soul!
I ain’t got long to stay here!

Chorus.

This is called the slave trade triangle and it shows where they went. In the slaves states they were forced to pick cotton, sugar and tobacco. They would get badly hurt if they weren't doing enough work. This event impacted a lot of people and it still does till this day.
