Aim; To look at the different ways we can prevent climate change in the future.

Changing Our Future

What is the cost?

The CO2 level has soured since when?
Industrial revolution.

What are the effects in the UK?

  1.  Warm Days.
  2.  From suffer of heat waves.
  3.  Species can disappear. 
How many climate refugees will there be in Britain by 2050?
200,000 million.

When will Fair born be flooded?
Sometimes in to next 60 years.

What are some of the other things that will be 'swallowed by the waves'?
  1.  1.5 million homes.
  2.  100,000 from coastal erosion.
  3.  1000 toxic sites at risk.
How can we stop climate change?
  1.  Removing all the gas boilers. 
  2.  Plant more trees.
  3.  Running car on solar battery.
What ideas are school children having about climate change?
  1. Protesting.
  2. They don't want to have kids when they are older.
  3. Don't drive all the time. 
What is the atmosphere called?

a Waste Dump.

What is the last statement the reporter made?

We know what we need to do, we have got the technology. What we lack is the
political will.



What places will be effected?

There will be various places that will be affected.

What else do we need to think about?

Not to build places near the sea.

What other places around NZ will be affected?

Any of the pacific islands.

What does this do to our drinking water?

It gets more salty.

What are the main concerns?
  1. Coastal erosion.
  2. Coastal flooding.

What can we do?

  1. Using public transport.
  2. Not using fossil fuels.
  3. Using things that are not so hard on carbon dioxide.

What is the one, silver bullet solution?

Nobody 

What is the mix of things we need to start doing?
  1.   Being able to use more renewable's.
  2.   Using Solar heating.
  3.  Start using public transport more often.

Where does our food come from?


  • Choose your favourite food.

Pizza comes from Southern Italy.

Pizza dough

Pizza is packaged in a box when it is ready to go.
  • What resources do you need to produce this food item (e.g. land, water, oil, food, etc.)? 

The resources needed to make pizza is natural resources. That may include Tomatoes, Onions, Mushrooms, Olives, Anchovies, Garlic, Peppers, Salt, Pepper, Oregano, Basil and Water.

  • Would this item have been processed? 
Yes, this food has been processed. 
  • Is there anything unique or significant about the food item (e.g. fair-trade, local)? 
Yes, its packaging. 
  • What else do you notice about this food that affects its climate friendliness? 
When your finished eating a pizza your left with the pizza box and some people could not put it in the rubbish so it will create pollution.
  • Do you think this food is climate friendly (Circle)?       YES   NO

Because Pizza is processed.

To try process it less.

The water Cycle

AIM: TO LOOK AT THE WATER CYCLE AND HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS AFFECTING IT.

Definition:

The Cycle processes by which water circulates between the Earths ocean's, atmosphere and land involving precipitation as it rains and snow. It will eventually evaporate then it will condense and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration. 



Scientific words:


  • Evaporation. When water is heated by radiant energy it turns into water vapor.
  • Transpiration. Evaporation from plants.
  • Condensation. When water vapour cools, molecules join together and form clouds.
  • Precipitation. When clouds get heavy the waters falls as rain, sleet, hail, or snow.
  • Acidification: the action or process of making or becoming acidic.

We will be conducting an experiment that looks at the different ways that climate change is affecting the water cycle.

THE WATER CYCLE EXPERIMENT

Bag 1: Normal Water cycle
Bag 2: Water cycle with CO2 added: like Oceans in climate change
Bag 3: Water cycle with ice added: like Antarctica in climate change

Material:

  1.  Plastic zip lock bag
  2.  Marker
  3.  1 cup of water
  4.  2 drops of food colouring
  5. litmus paper
  6. soda water

Steps:

  1.  Find your group of 3
  2.  Get materials  
  3.  Draw the water cycle on the bag
  4.  Put 1 cup of water in the bag
  5.  Put 2 drops of food colouring in the bag of water

Findings:


Conclusion: The water cycle is basically the earths cycle. Its goes round and round with Evaporation, Condensation, precipitation and transpiration. The water cycle is water from the sea because then it will evaporate and it will go into the clouds then it will come back when it rains. I will have more of an conclusion and findings when we next have science.


For the second bag we used soda water. We used soda water because it has carbon dioxide in it so it will create moisture in the bag. We put a piece of litmus paper in the bag so over a few days it will turn into a orange ish red colour. The litmus paper changes colour because of the carbon dioxide. It starts of yellow and it will change into red when the carbon dioxide comes out of the soda water and it will create moisture, then it will go into the litmus paper and turn it into red.
