Dirty water expirement

Today in Science we did the dirty water experiment. If you don't know what the dirty water experiment is, its basically where you have to make a filter and see how well it cleans the water or if it does or not.
I was working with Shontelle and Addyson and our Filter didn't go so well. Here are some photos.

Aim: To make a filtration plant using household materials.

Water Filtration Plant

What is filtration?

Filtration is separating solids from liquids by adding a medium through which only the liquid can pass.

Examples are:

  1. Filter in a swimming pool
  2. Kidneys are the filter to the human body
  3. A Water jug
  4. Coffee bean Plunger

Materials

1.Bottle
2.Filter paper
3.Sand
4.Pebbles/stones
5.Dirty water
6.Scissors

Steps

1. Get a bottle then cut it in half, so you now have a funnel and a container.
2. Get some filter paper and fold it in half then fold it in half again.
3. Put some sand and pack it into the cone made out of filter paper, then place it into the funnel.
4. Get the pebbles/stones and put some into the funnel on top of the sand.
5. Now you can get some dirty water and pour it into the funnel.
6. Now see if your water is clean or not.

As soon as we poured the dirty water into the filter it just flowed right through the pebbles, sand and filter paper and the water just stayed the same. I think it was a fail because there wasn't enough sand in the filter paper and it just went right through it.

Stop Motion

The past 2 weeks, our class 7/8Al and 7/8Wh has Art modules every Monday and Thursday. In Art we have to make a 20 second long Stop Motion. There were 3 topics we got to choose from on how to make our stop motion. The topics are White board, Lego and Clay. My group decided to mix things up and do clay and Lego together.

The classes were inspired by Roald Dahl and the illustrator Quentin Blake. When we start to make these films we need it least 1 character from one of Roald Dahl's books. The character we used is Jack from Jack and the beanstalk. Our Story's don't need to be the same but we needed a character from one of Roald Dahl's book.

Our Story is about Jack getting bullied by Hurculey's and Nick, Then he meets a new Friend named Leo. If you don't know what a stop motion is, it is a video but taken by a lot of photos so it can be a film. Next week we get to start filming and putting our creations together.

In 6 weeks our films will be ready to share so come back to my blog then and you'll see how our film went.

The Treaty of Waitangi

This this week in class we started to do some activities. Our choices were The treaty of Waitangi, Waitangi Day and who was Hone Heke, I picked the treaty of Waitangi.

The treaty was signed by the British leaders and the Maori Tribal in 1840. The Maori Tribal and British leaders had a misunderstanding because they both signed the same treaty but they don't celebrate it together.

The Treaty was signed in the bay of islands on February 6 so that's Waitangi Day. There were two different versions of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi treaty that was signed, one in Maori and another in English.

When the Maori iwi (tribes) were signing the treaty they didn't realise the they were agreeing for the British to have rule over them.

Since 1974 February 6, New Zealand celebrates Waitangi Day. Waitangi Day is celebrated in so much different ways. Many people travel to Waitangi for the official treaty commemorations, while others see it as a day to celebrate being a New Zealander.
